"Back On The Chain Gang"

(The Pretenders)

Well despite all the other cycling then there is something about the bike handling, the continual mental analysis of time elapsed, location and then the map reading that is unique to a tour and after Sophie (favourite youngest daughter) took my obligatory departure snap then I headed toward Elvington where Richard Hammond nearly bought it on the runway and then on to Melbourne. My father was posted here during the war and rose to the dizzy heights as Corporal in 10 Squadron maintaining Halifax bombers. He was on many bases but when he got this posting my grandmother nearly fainted at the prospect of her only son being posted ‘Down Under’…..she was pleased to learn that it was still in striking distance of her in Leeds! On to Market Weighton and the home of my favourite radio show …”Nothing But The Blues” on Vixen 101 and then a bit of a hill (over 300 feet) before descending into Hull (or is that descending into Hell?). I followed a fabulous teenager riding her bike in all black and flip flops and no helmet who made the rush hour traffic wary as she went left or right with no hand signals. Glad to note that taxi driving hadn’t improved over York as one went through a pedestrian crossing on red! Familiar place Hull as I met the first wife here and then I have been across here occasionally on business….also saw REM at the KC Stadium in the obligatory rain a few years back. Got to the Docks and found 6 other cyclists and as you can see from the photo I  got a new best friend (no idea who he was). Anyway Day 1 over and looking forward to the crossing.
