"Cross Town Traffic"

(JImi Hendrix)

The ferry wasn't busy and I rolled off with the other cyclist and let them lead me on the way to Brugge. The Belgians are wonderful when it comes to bicycles...the drivers grind to a halt about 20 yards short of a junction when you are approaching, one chap detoured on his own bike ride to put me back on track and I rode all the way through the country on a cycle path (Peter you would love it)! However the traffic was intense and the countryside dull (but blissfully flat) and despite being given a free Coca Cola glass at McDonalds then I was not won over.

Next it was France and Menin was just starting to hit the streets on  Saturday afternoon. You could tell I was amongst the French because a lady in a cake shop adopted that confused and pained face as I attempted French....you know the face that people make when they attempting the mental arithmetic of 16 divided by 2.438. Anyway Lille took some navigating (pushed my bike through heaving crowds)  before getting to Merignies at 5.50 pm. Quite a basic site but I was glad to stop for the day. Day 3 was a windy route (poor map reading) but more like it as regards countryside before discovering a campsite by chance and immediately dropping anchor at Semeries. Getting there a bit earlier gave me a chance to dry out the tent at 28 degrees. The tent was wet because the mornings can be cold with heavy dew. Anyway legs good, plenty to eat, lots of calls and texts home (Sophie's birthday on July 3rd) and an open but increasing steep road ahead.
